Returning to work

The new TCHC Returnship Program is an internship program developed for and tailored to residents of TCHC aged 35 and older who have been out of the workforce for a period of time and wish to return.

Jeanette Robinson-Daley joined Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) in September 2024 as part of the Returnship Program. As an intern, Jeanette joined the Employee Communications team within the Strategic Communications division. Jeanette, along with the other program interns, was with the organization until the end of December 2024. She wrote about her experience below.

Jeanette's experience

One afternoon in August, I spotted a flyer on my lobby wall that read, “Returnship… 35 and up.” I had two thoughts: one, amazing! And two, finally!

I had often seen postings of programs aimed at youth, but it was exciting to see this opportunity aimed at my demographic.

I spent years in the professional services industry and, more recently, worked as an entrepreneur. When my business plans were sidelined during the pandemic, I was unsure of what to do next.

The program concept inspired me to apply, igniting a part of myself that I believed had faded—the ‘yes I can’ mindset. Whether I received the position or not, I was proud of myself for stepping outside of my comfort zone and applying.

From the very beginning, I found the application process very thoughtful and supportive. Applicants could apply without a resume, which was a welcomed relief. I appreciated that the program offered assistance to those who needed help with what can often be a complicated process. The interview process was equally memorable, held in a big bright sunny room that set a positive tone for the experience.

Out of 200 applicants, only 13 were chosen to participate in the program. My fellow interns were a group of bright and confident individuals that each brought a unique set of insights. Together, we went through a series of enriching training sessions and workshops that I believe many companies should consider using as a model for onboarding their employees. Through it all, our Program Coordinator Jason Chin was there to lead and guide us while making sure we had everything we needed to succeed.

After two weeks of training, we were introduced to our respective business units. Like anyone starting a new job, I had my fears. However, I soon discovered that my team was a group of down-to-earth, talented people who are wonderfully welcoming. Their mentorship has opened my mind to a wealth of networking opportunities and possible career paths.

Over the last three months, the internship has provided me with invaluable opportunities and has helped me grow personally and professionally. I am excited to keep learning and contributing meaningfully through my career.

In a brief one-on-one with Stacy Golding, Community Services Coordinator, she told me, “I remember when this [program] was just a thought.” This was a great example of how the dedicated employees of TCHC can transform an idea into reality, and then in turn, transform lives. I am thankful that I noticed that flyer and took a chance on this program, and myself.
