Statement on September 17 shooting at 1 Driftwood Court

Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) offers our deepest condolences to the families and friends of two community members who died following a shooting in the Driftwood community on Tuesday, September 17. We strongly condemn this act of gun violence which has no place in our community or any other.

One of the victims, Ibrahim Handule, was a former TCHC employee who supported youth programming in our communities. TCHC staff have been in the Driftwood community since the day of the incident, working with Toronto Police and City of Toronto staff to speak to residents, provide information, and offer any available support.

Driftwood is home to nearly 1,900 tenants, including 678 children and youth, and this incident does not reflect the character or vibrancy of the community there. The community has come together with TCHC in the last year to advocate for new programming that benefits young people and strengthens the safety of community spaces for residents. TCHC is committed to continuing this ongoing work, partnering with tenants, community organizations, and Toronto Police Services to improve community safety. This incident underscores the need to continue this critically important work.

The incident is currently under investigation by Toronto Police Service, and TCHC is cooperating with the investigation. We urge anyone with information about this crime to contact Toronto Police at 416-808-2222 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477
