How to keep comfortable and save energy as temperatures drop

Fall weather might not feel the same these days because of climate change. Temperatures will soon drop though, as winter is coming. At Toronto Community Housing (TCHC), we are committed to helping tenants stay comfortable in their homes. So is your unit too hot, too cold, or just right?

Many factors can affect the temperature in your unit: if the heat is on, windows are open or closed, the weather outside, how much sunlight you get, or even the location of your unit in the building. To make sure that you are comfortable indoors, many TCHC buildings have thermostats installed inside units. These devices put the power to control your unit’s temperature in your hands, so you can find the perfect balance.

How thermostats work

Thermostats are easy to use. They either turn the heat on or off, helping to regulate the temperature. Some have a dial you turn, while others have buttons with “up” and “down” arrows. Learning how to use your thermostat properly is key to staying warm without overheating.

When the system is running, keep your windows closed to stop heat from escaping. If your unit feels too hot, turn the thermostat down to save energy. Small actions, like wearing cozy layers indoors and keeping vents or radiators clear, can also help lower your energy use. These are easy ways for us all to fight climate change.

Be prepared for winter

As we get ready for colder days and maybe even some beautiful snow, think about how your unit feels. If you have a thermostat, take some time to get familiar with it. If you suspect your thermostat isn’t working properly or notice drafty windows, call the Client Care Centre at 416-981-5500 for help.
