Scholarships handed out to Alexandra Park students

To date, TCHC and Tridel have handed out over $80,000 in scholarships to more than 25 tenants.

This past December, 15 members of the Alexandra Park community received scholarships. This is the third year of the scholarship program from Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) and Tridel. It is a key component of the revitalization’s social and economic development plans. The scholarship program will run annually until the revitalization is completed in 2038.

The award ceremony was held in the community on Thursday, December 4, 2026. TCHC President and CEO Sean Baird, Tridel President Jim Ritchie, Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik, and Member of Provincial Parliament Chris Glover all attended. Each helped hand out the awards as well as offered their congratulations.

Kabir Sheikh is a three-time scholarship recipient. He’s currently studying commerce at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Business. The annual tuition for his program is about $17,900 a year.

“This scholarship really helps me out. The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) covers up to $13,000 a year. So, between the two I don’t have to worry about having two or three jobs to cover the cost.”

Kabir plans on getting into data analysis and consulting once he graduates. While he doesn’t have two or three jobs, he does have one passion project on the go. “I have a part-time business with a couple of friends called MDZ Productions. It’s a community-focused organization that aims to empower youth through activities like community basketball tournaments and art events.”

He says the events aim to help combat violence while also fostering leadership and providing positive alternatives.

“We get some support from the City of Toronto and partner with groups like the YMCA for youth development programs and retreats. Between school and MDZ, my life is pretty busy, but well organized,” said Kabir with a laugh.

Sean Baird said he always enjoys attending the Alexandra Park scholarship awards presentation. “I try to visit the community as often as possible throughout the year. It’s always a pleasure to attend this ceremony, to see familiar faces, to congratulate the scholarship recipients and hear them talk about their school careers and future dreams.”
