Every drop counts: how we’re saving water at TCHC
Learn how we work together to use water wisely, lower our costs, and invest back in communities
Water is one of our most precious resources—and at Toronto Community Housing (TCHC), every drop we save makes a real difference. Tenants and staff are working together to use water wisely, reduce costs, and support greener, healthier communities.
Why water conservation matters
Water keeps our homes running and our communities thriving. Even though Canada has about 20 per cent of the world’s fresh water, only a small amount is easily accessible. Many communities have already experienced water shortages, and changing weather patterns mean conservation is more important than ever.
Using water wisely also helps manage energy use and infrastructure costs. When we save water, we:
Protect local lakes and rivers by lessening the strain on natural ecosystems.
Lower energy use and operating costs, helping keep buildings comfortable.
Stretch resources further, allowing TCHC to invest more in repairs and improvements.
Build more resilient homes, especially during hotter summers and unpredictable weather.
TCHC continues to upgrade water systems across our buildings by installing low-flow showerheads, toilets and aerators. These features use about 40 per cent less water. Teams across the organization are also working with staff and residents to reduce consumption through training, information sessions, and tailored plans for each building.
Easy ways to save water at home
Small habits add up. Try these simple water-saving tips:
Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, soaping your hands, or scrubbing dishes.
Take shorter showers—they use about half the water of a bath.
Report leaks right away. A dripping tap or running toilet wastes more water than you might think. Call the Client Care Centre at 416-981-5500.
Run full loads in your washing machine or dishwasher.
Use a basin or plug the sink when rinsing produce or dishes, instead of keeping the tap running.
Avoid using hoses to clean patios, sidewalks or cars. Sweeping or using a carwash is more water-efficient.
Be mindful of what you flush. Items like wipes, cotton swabs, bandages or diapers can cause clogs and wastewater issues. Please put those items in your garbage.
How your actions help the whole community
Water-saving habits don’t just benefit your household—they support the entire building. Less water use reduces strain on our infrastructure. This means there are less breakdowns, more comfortable homes, and lower maintenance costs.
Every litre counts. When we work together, we protect our environment and support more sustainable, affordable housing for everyone at TCHC.
